Crossovers

Not to be confused with compact SUVs, crossover vehicles have forever altered the landscape of the SUV market. Not only are crossovers more stylish and affordable than other sport utility vehicles, but they also have the best SUV gas mileage. Crossovers provide the comforts and handling of a sedan, but with the versatility and ruggedness of a sport utility vehicle. With both entry-level and luxury crossover SUVs available, there are many crossover models available for people of various income levels.
Best Crossover Rankings
With so many crossovers on the market today, which ones are the best? Here are three of the top-selling crossover SUVs of 2012. Keep these options in mind if you shopping for a new crossover vehicle.
Kia Sportage
MSRP: $18,500
MPG: 29 hwy/21 city
Details: This stylish vehicle is quick and nimble with acceleration and handling, and the crossover vehicle's powerful turbo engine provides plenty of toughness for different driving conditions. The rear interior leaves something to be desired, and this crossover SUV also lacks additional cargo room.
Chevrolet Equinox
MSRP: $23,530
MPG: 32 hwy/22 city
Details: Of all affordable CUVs, the Equinox may be the best crossover for people seeking an outwardly stylish ride with plenty of interior space. The steering in this vehicle isn't as responsive, but the cabin is quiet and passengers have lots of room to stretch out.
Nissan Juke
MSRP: $16,982
MPG: $35,640
Details: The Juke is perhaps the best SUV for the money for shoppers looking for a sporty, nimble crossover that can handle all kinds of driving conditions. Some auto buyers may be turned off by the vehicle's unique styling, while others may see this as a plus. The cabin is of lower quality, with a lot of hard plastics instead of wood and fabric, but the lower-quality interior design features allow for this vehicle to have an affordable price.
Crossovers and SUV Reviews
Would you like to know the top 10 SUVs on the market today, or which crossovers are the most highly recommended by various automotive publications? The Internet makes getting this kind of information easy, thanks to the multitude of available SUV reviews both in print and online. If you compare the list of top 10 SUVs from one year to the next, you will find two things to be true: 1) The list will contain some crossover SUVs, and 2) There are several SUVs that are rated as the best from one year to the next. This underscores the importance of doing careful research before purchasing a new vehicle.
Crossovers are affordable, fuel-efficient vehicles that provide the luxuries and functionality of SUVs but with the practicality of a sedan. They're great investments during a time in which gas prices are so unpredictable. Also, many of the newest crossover SUVs to be hitting showroom floors are hybrids, which further increases the benefits to the customers. With so many options to choose from, you are bound to find a crossover vehicle that is compatible with your needs and your budget.

In my opinion, the best SUV for the money is the Kia Sportage, which qualifies as a crossover vehicle. The only downside of the Sportage is its lack of interior space, but the crossover is just as versatile as other small SUVs and it costs a fraction of the price. Plus, when you compare various SUV reviews, the Sportage scores very high marks across the board.

One of the best crossover vehicles in recent years is the Toyota Matrix. This vehicle is virtually the same as the Pontiac Vibe. The Matrix probably has a higher resale value just because it's a Toyota, but this may be the best SUV for the money considering its brand, gas mileage, cost and driving capabilities. The Matrix has options for 4wd and all-wheel drive, making it a great option for drivers in all parts of the United States.

Lexus makes some great crossovers for people who are interested in luxury crossover SUVs. Just be aware that although these vehicles are nice, they are significantly more expensive than entry-level crossovers without as many luxury features. Many of the crossovers ranked as top 10 SUVs are not luxury models, so nobody should feel the need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get quality crossover vehicles that are built to last.
